You don’t have to say “hike”, in fact, you don’t have to say anything. “Hike” or similar words are just audible notifications to the offensive line that the ball has been snapped. No actual call is required. Neither is snapping between the legs. Unless the referee blows his whistle, and exchange between the quarterback and center is considered a snap.

What you people who think this was cool seem to forget is this is pre-teen sports. It’s not about winning! It’s about building character, having fun and learning how to play the game. This coach doesn’t get that.
On top of the above reasons, this was a dangerous play. As the kid was turned sideways to the line of scrimmage he could have been hit by an unblocked defender on the full run. This would have been a crushing blow. In fact, if your for that play you must also think that is what the defense should have done, crushed him before he ran away. I urge those in favor of this to think before they speak.

This is awesome. I think it shows the kids to be creative, to pay attention. I try to teach my daughter that it’s up to her, to think for herself. There were likely kids in the defense line whose instinct was to tackle that kid, but they were obedient instead of logical.
A potential outcome is that the kids involved in that game will be aware of possibilities beyond the norm, even if they don’t agree with the results. (And that timing is everything, no?)

You need to teach kids how to succeed with their heads as opposed to just plain brute force. They should be raised so that they’re able to compete in the real world.

This play is completely legal and there is no cheating. Goal line set. Center has the ball and hands it behind him, which starts the play. As long as there is no movement on the front line before the ball is snapped, then the play can continue because there is no false start. The ball is on the line of scrimmage. The center places his hand on the ball, picks it up and places it between his legs to the quarterback, which is a regulation snap. The EXACT SECOND the Center moves the ball, the play has begun, no questions. The Center then stands up, which is legal since the play has started. The Quarterback is allowed to go wherever he wants now. He can run forward, backwards, side to side. He chooses to go to the right, then streak. The only difference is he fooled the shit out of the other team by talking to his coach, which is (again) perfectly legal.
Had their been no talking, this would be just another QB Option or roll out.
I’ve seen NFL teams do the same thing in professional football. Shotgun set with HB on the side. The QB pretends the coach has called him over so he begins to jog to the side line, and the ball is directly snapped to the HB who takes off. Football is the most creative sport out there. Who knows what zaaaaaaany things they’ll come up with next!

First off, this play is hilarious! Secondly, football is a mind game; attempting to predict your opponent’s next move is all part of the strategy. Kudos to these kids for pulling off an unforeseeable action. And finally, when it comes down to it, regardless of whether it’s a pick-up game or the Super Bowl, the game is about winning. It sucks to lose, whether you played with your whole heart or not. And because of that, in the reality of competition, you deal with aspects of the game that are not “fair.” Great example is the Reggie Bush Push…As an alumna and die-hard ND fan, I was ridiculously upset over that play, which led to our loss. But as Coach Weis commented after the game, he would gladly commend a player of his who did the same. As with any other educational experience, the kids playing this sport learn the rules, but they also learn that the world works within those rules only to an extent. It breeds critical thinking and coping skills vital for a child’s appropriate development. And I guarantee every kid on the opposing team wishes they were the team to have pulled it off.

Both the NFHS and the NCAA prohibit the pre snap deception that implies the snap is not imminent. This originated with the “missing tee” play where a player yells he will retrieve the tee from the sideline. As he moves toward the sideline, the ball is snapped and thrown to the player headed toward the sideline. This is the case pointed to in ruling the pre snap deception is illegal and the penalty is 15 yards for unsportsmanlike. I am not sure on youth leagues that may or may not subscribe to NFHS or NCAA rules. Deception after the snap, such as fake handoffs or faked punts are a completely different matter and perfectly legal. Note: officials are not always totally knowledgeable of the rules and we would like them to be.

Sorry folks but the play is ILLEGAL according to NHFS Rule 2, Section 40, Articles 1 and 2, AND Rule 9-9-3. Specifically noted in the case book as being conduct beyond unsportsmanlike and thus illegal. Is it creative? Yup. Legal? Nope. I’d blow it dead as an illegal snap (5 yds) and then assess an unsportsmanlike (15 yds) if they tried again with a proper snap. I think it is a creative play, but I don’t think it should be used with kids this young. I played corner back at this age and I always hit until there was a whistle. It can be dangerous to do with kids. I know even up until high school football I was kicked out of games (call me what you like) for hitting hard up until the whistle (yes clean and legal).
I agree with those here by saying that if a defensive player would have creamed that kid from the side at full pace and picked up the ball, the flags would have been flying, the coaching crying and bemoaning the horror and the kid would have been made out to be a monster and would have been punished…all for doing what the trick play supporters say he should have. wow.. you guys need to chill. and i would assume eveyone who is complaining about how unfair it was is a loser in high school and in life. if someone on your team wanted to run that would you really say “is this really fair?” these kids want to win. if it’s illegal fine, but stop bashing the kids for being immoral and the coaches for being self-centered. the next time you find a kid who wants to lose please slap him.
